Muziek Alive! is an entirely different gig. We play in nursing homes and have already been doing it for more than 30 years. This gig is not only about music, it’s about switching on elderly people with dementia or physical problems and drawing them into an atmosphere where they can sing, dance or clap their hands and tap their toes. We’re pretty good at it because we really love doing it. Denise Marie bonded with older people as a young child. Her mother worked in a nursing home and Denise went along with her to work a few times during school holidays. She realised then just how much these people need entertainment. Later while living in Santa Fe in the early 90’s she was asked to play in a nursing home through Outside In, a non-profit that brought music into institutions. She even taught a couple of guitar lessons in the teen prison, the guitars were donated by the Bonnie Raitt Foundation. Since living in The Netherlands she plays regularly with Marcel Koster in nursing homes. Mostly they play old Dutch songs but also some American classics.
