Blues
Week: Denise Marie excites with feminine expression
With blues
in the soul one can write impressive songs. Last Sunday at the VHS Hall
"Blues Lady" Denise Marie let her listeners feel that music
and especially the blues are more than a simple intonation of lyrics.
Her songs go way under the skin and always involve her own experiences,
hopes and doubts.
The musical
spectrum went from classical blues to country-rock elements, somewhere
between Joni Mitchell and Carole King. Denise Marie belongs to the up-and-coming
female musicians from New Orleans, presenting songs from her own albums,
highly praised by the critics.
For the first
time we saw a fascinating example of her live qualities. Deep and soft
sounds mixed with powerful expression showed that the blues mirrors and
attitude to life where dark valleys and tender feelings take turns and
deliver goose bump feelings. Denise Marie made clear that it's all about
experiencing the blues and feeling the message of her songs. Her poetry
let us experience the wide range of sentiments contained in this musical
style.
For example
"The Day Is A Dream In New Orleans" transports us to the city
where -in its special atmosphere- Denise seems to have found her musical
home. There she decided to make music. There she produced her first CD,
and obviously this city inspired her to do everything she so impressively
brought to us during The Blues Week. Producer Wolfgang Pieker enriched
the program of Blues Week by bringing us a very impressive female representative
of this genre.
